VIDEO: What boiler should I get?

The type of boiler you need depends on how small/large your home is and how many bathrooms you use every day.

Combi boilers are the most popular type of boiler for UK homes. This is because they heat your water up as you use it and provide a high pressure supply of hot water from the mains.

In comparison, heat-only boilers work by heating the water that’s in your hot water tank. They’re most suitable for homes that need to have large volumes of hot water that’s available to be used at once. Heat-only boilers are particularly useful in larger homes where there are multiple bathrooms to supply.

This video will help you understand the differences between the systems:

Which boiler manufacturer should I choose?

The other question to consider is your boiler manufacturer. Boilers are like any other product on the market and vary in performance, lifespan and price, depending on the quality of the design. There’s a wide range of leading boiler manufacturers out there, two of the best are:

  • VaillantVaillant
  • Worcester Bosch

Worcester Bosch Group

By choosing a boiler from a trusted manufacturer, you’re investing in a high quality boiler that last for around 10 years or more. You’ll also benefit from a longer warranty period. For instance, both of the above manufacturers offer 10-year warranties.

Will my choice of manufacturer impact the efficiency of my boiler?

Fortunately, the brand of boiler you choose won’t impact how efficient your boiler is due to government legislation. Current Boiler Plus legislation means that every gas boiler that’s installed in the UK has to have an energy efficiency rating of A, which equates to a performance of no less than ErP 92%. This means that 92% of the energy it uses goes directly to heating your home and less than 8% is wasted.

How to know which model to go with?

The best way to choose a new boiler is to have a survey carried out by a heating engineer. You can do your own research, of course, but an engineer will be able to tell you for certain which models are best suited to the way you use your home. Our boiler surveys are free and usually don’t take an hour to carry out.
