The founder

Kultar Singh started BASI in 1990 from a unit on Leeds Road in Bradford, directly across from where our head office stands today. He had spent the previous decade at British Gas, starting at sixteen as a heating apprentice and working his way up to Area Quality Control Manager.

When BG launched a push to turn its engineers into salesmen, Kultar walked. He and the engineers who worked with him did not like the idea of scaring old grannies into extras they did not need. BASI was founded on a single rule, and it is still the rule: do the job properly, sell people only what they need.

Father and son

In 2005, Kultar’s son Jas Singh joined the business with his own four-year apprenticeship, college day-release included, and a clear brief: bring BASI into the 21st century without losing what made it work. Twenty years on, we fit 80 jobs a week, up from 20 when Jas first came on board.

Over those years we have sub-contracted for British Gas, Vaillant and Bradford Council, and today we look after the boilers in homes managed by some of Yorkshire’s leading estate agents and property firms.

Stronger through two recessions

We came through the 2008 and 2020 downturns stronger than we went in. People wanted a brand that would still be here in ten years to back up the 10-year warranties they were signing up to. We were, and we are.

The BASI Way

This year we formalised the thing customers always said made a BASI job different. We call it The BASI Way. Every month the whole team meets to walk through every piece of customer feedback, what we did well and what we can lift. Customer satisfaction sits at 97% as we write this, and we think we can push it higher.

The new head office

The new HQ is five minutes from where Kultar started, and five times the size of the original. The old place leaked heat and money into the Bradford sky. The new one runs on a biomass wood-pellet boiler for the heating, solar thermal panels for the hot water, and solar PV for the electricity. Energy-efficient heating controls and lighting throughout. Practising what we preach turns out to be the easiest sales pitch in the business.
