Boiler cover vs British Gas HomeCare: is it worth it?
Boiler cover is worth it if an unexpected repair would be hard to absorb in one go and you want the annual service handled for you. If your boiler is new and under warranty, a one-off service may be all you need. Compared with British Gas HomeCare, BASI Smart Care is fixed price, has no separate call-out fee and no surprise excess, and the work is done by our own employed engineers rather than sub-contractors. National plans often cost more per month at a like-for-like level of cover and can add an excess per claim.
That is the honest summary. Here is the detail so you can judge it for your own situation, not just take our word for it.
What boiler cover actually is
A cover plan is a monthly direct debit that bundles your annual boiler service with repair cover, so a breakdown does not land as one big bill and the service is never forgotten. It is insurance plus maintenance, not a warranty.
When it is worth it
- Older boiler, out of warranty: cover spreads the risk of a repair that could otherwise be a few hundred pounds at once.
- You want the service done automatically: the annual service is built in, so it is not missed and the warranty (if any) stays valid.
- You would rather budget monthly: a fixed monthly figure is easier to plan than an unpredictable repair bill.
When it is probably not worth it
- New boiler under a 10-year manufacturer warranty: the manufacturer already covers parts and labour for faults. A service-only option may be enough; you can still book a one-off £80 boiler service to keep that warranty valid.
- You have a healthy emergency fund: if a one-off repair is not a problem for you, self-insuring can work out cheaper over time.
How BASI Smart Care compares to British Gas HomeCare
The honest differences:
- Price: national plans like HomeCare often cost more per month for a comparable level of cover.
- Call-out fee: Smart Care has no separate call-out charge. Check any plan for this, it is where headline prices are misleading.
- Excess: Smart Care has no surprise per-claim excess. Some national plans apply one.
- Who turns up: Smart Care work is done by employed, uniformed BASI engineers, never sub-contractors. The company that sells the plan is the company that does the work.
- Contract: Smart Care is a rolling direct debit you can cancel anytime, not a locked-in year.
This is not to say a national plan is bad, it is to say compare like-for-like: monthly price, call-out fee, excess, and who actually attends.
The Smart Care levels
- Smart Care 100: the boiler plus the annual service.
- Smart Care 200: adds the wider central heating system.
- Smart Care 300: adds plumbing and drains.
All by direct debit, annual service included, cancel anytime, and we tell you up front what is and is not covered rather than burying it in the small print.
The simple test
Ask yourself: could you comfortably absorb a £400 to £600 repair tomorrow? If yes, and your boiler is fairly new, a one-off service may be all you need. If not, a plan that includes the service and removes the call-out and excess risk is usually worth the monthly cost.
