What central heating system is right for my home?

Having the right central heating system enables the whole family to stay warm while saving you money on your bills. Most modern homes are fitted with a gas combi boiler, which sends hot water to your taps at mains pressure and removes the need for storage tanks. But not every home is suited to a combi, so here are three things to consider.

A cosy home warmed by central heating

1. Bathroom demand

If your home has multiple bathrooms in regular use, you may be better off with a conventional or heat-only system. A combi delivers hot water at mains pressure, so using multiple sources at once may weaken the flow. A conventional system stores hot water in a cylinder, giving access to a pre-programmed amount that can be used at once without affecting pressure.

2. Do you have a gas supply?

Most modern homes have a gas supply, but if your home is not on the grid you need to consider alternatives. An engineer can recommend an oil or biomass system, which are just as efficient as gas and work similarly with a different fuel source.

3. Size matters

Larger homes with many rooms need a more powerful boiler. Properties with around 20 radiators may need a 35 to 42kW boiler, though this varies depending on how you use your home.

Our engineers conduct a free survey to assess your home and usage so they can recommend a system built around your family life. We install boilers to suit all homes from leading manufacturers. See also our guide on combi and system boilers.
