Get winter ready with BASI boiler tips
The colder weather is coming and now is the perfect time to make sure your boiler and central heating are running smoothly. After a warmer summer it is easy to forget to check, so we have put together our best tips to get you and your boiler winter ready.
Make sure your boiler service is up to date
A boiler runs more smoothly and efficiently when you know the internal parts are leak-free and working as they should. Most boilers have a sticker or card insert in the drop-down door on the front, dated by the engineer who carried out your last service. If not, our engineers can get your servicing back on track. After a summer of barely using your heating, checking your seals and pipework for airlocks or breaks is a good idea before freezing temperatures make any issues worse.
Bleed your radiators
Radiators fill with air over the year, so after a summer of little use they may no longer work efficiently. Turn your heating on and feel each radiator, checking it heats evenly bottom to top. If one is cooler at the top, release the trapped air with a radiator key until water appears, then close the valve. Failing to bleed radiators can put pressure on your boiler.
Check your boiler pressure
Your boiler pressure is displayed on the front. If the indicator is lower than recommended, apply more pressure using the pressure valve until the desired reading is reached. Your boiler manual gives the recommended pressure. If you cannot add pressure, your boiler may need professional care, so give our friendly staff a call.
Insulate your pipes
If you have pipework exposed outside your property, insulate it before colder temperatures arrive, as it could otherwise freeze or be damaged. Most DIY shops stock insulation foam that is quick and easy to cut to size and apply.
Upgrade your old, tired boiler
If your boiler is over 10 years old, elements may need replacing or repairing before winter. Many parts for older boilers have increased in price due to lack of demand, so it may be a good time to look at a new energy efficient boiler. We can install one, with manufacturer warranty, in just 48 hours.
Be prepared, get winter ready now
Being prepared for winter is a great way to avoid unexpected costs. Those who actively check and maintain their boiler and heating throughout the year can avoid repair or replacement costs when they need their heating most.
