How to spray paint a radiator step by step

Radiators discolour over time, but this is easily fixed with a quick lick of paint. Radiator paint is readily available from hardware shops and the easiest option is spray paint. The finish is just as effective as traditional paint and can be done while leaving the radiator on the wall.

You will need:

  • Radiator spray paint in your chosen colour and finish (check how many radiators each can covers)
  • Sugar soap
  • Paper or plastic sheets to protect walls and floors
  • Dust mask
  • Sandpaper
  • Cloths and a cleaning basin
  • Masking tape

Step 1: Turn off your radiators

They should be cold to the touch so the paint settles properly and does not run. Turn them off a few hours before you spray.

Step 2: Prepare the surrounding areas

Cover the walls and floor with paper or plastic sheets and mask them in place. Cover a large area, as spray paint travels. Mask pipework and any plastic or stainless fixtures you want paint-free.

Step 3: Sand down the radiator

Give the radiator a quick sand to remove rust, flaky paint and tough dirt. You do not need to sand it right back, just smooth out bumps and create a better surface for the paint.

Step 4: Clean the radiator

Dust it thoroughly, then wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it so it is free of dust and debris.

Step 5: Treat the radiator

Wash the radiator with sugar soap, mixed according to the container instructions, and wipe over it completely.

Step 6: Get ready to spray

Close internal doors and open external windows wide to let fumes out. Double-check your floors and walls are protected and put on your mask.

Step 7: Shake and start spraying

Shake the can for up to a minute. Holding it around 20 to 25cm from the surface, spray in up and down motions, moving slowly along the radiator. Spray along the top in left-right motions and go over ridges and corners at a few angles. Only go over each area once, as layering too thickly causes drips and runs. If it is not concentrated enough, let it dry (around 30 minutes) and apply another coat.

Step 8: Tidy up

Once the paint is totally dry, clear away the protective sheets and masking tape. Check the room and wipe away any settled paint, as it travels far and wide.
