How to save energy in the kitchen and reduce bills

The kitchen is one of the places we use the most energy in the home. Preparing meals, cleaning and doing laundry all need electric appliances, gas and hot water.

Food being reheated in a microwave to save energy

To save energy in the kitchen you do not need to do less, it is simply a case of building some good habits. Being aware of the most efficient way to do things limits unnecessary energy waste, which adds up to savings over time.

1. Use the hob wisely

Think about how many rings you use at once. Could you steam veg on top of a pot you are already using? Turn things off a few minutes before serving, as the heat of the ring keeps pans warm.

2. Microwave over hob or oven

Reheating in a microwave is more energy efficient than the hob or oven. Use the recommended settings to run it efficiently.

3. Defrost food and leftovers ahead of time

Leave food to thaw naturally on the side rather than heating it. It uses no extra energy and takes no effort.

4. Let food cool before refrigerating or freezing

Putting hot food in the fridge or freezer makes the appliance work overtime to bring the temperature down, using electricity. Let food cool first.

5. Wash dishes in one go

Washing up as you go through the day wastes water and hot water energy. Fill the bowl before tackling the dishes.

6. Turn the oven off early

Ovens conserve heat and stay hot for at least 10 minutes after switching off. Turning it off slightly before you take food out will not stop it cooking but saves energy.

7. Fill your appliances

Running washing machines, dryers and dishwashers with partial loads wastes energy and increases the number of loads you run. If you cannot wait, run a short cycle.

8. Leave space behind your fridge-freezer

Around 10cm behind the fridge-freezer helps warm air circulate out the back and makes it work more efficiently.

9. Pack your fridge and freezer tightly

Keeping things organised helps keep cold air in, and you can find things faster so the door is open for less time, conserving energy.

10. Don’t overfill the kettle

As small appliances go, the kettle is one of the biggest users of electricity. Avoid overfilling it or re-boiling it unnecessarily.

None of these ideas are new, but we often forget the small things that run up our bills. It helps to remind ourselves of good habits.
