Green energy and alternative ways to heat your home
Home energy provides heat and hot water for your home. Heating your home is one of the biggest household expenditures. Ofgem estimate the average home spends about £104.50 per month, or £1,254 a year, on heating and electricity (based on 2019 prices).
Home heating is not something you can go without. But you may want to get control of your heating costs and energy consumption. Green home energy is worth exploring for alternative ways to heat your home.
Most homes have a gas boiler and central heating system, and flats and apartments often run off electric heating. Both these methods consume paid for energy, and the cost is dependent on the prices stipulated by energy providers.
Are there alternative ways to heat your home?
Switching away from gas or electric home energy saves money and gives you control. You’re not tied to the prices dictated by energy providers as the energy you use is self-generating. Two alternative home heating options that are becoming more popular are:
- Air source heat pumps
- Solar thermal technology

There is an initial investment for these green energy measures. But once they are up and running, your energy bills and carbon footprint are slashed forever. How? Because these methods for heating your home use ‘free’ energy resources i.e. air and sun light.
Solar thermal energy
Solar thermal technology captures the sun’s energy and turns it into hot water. Domestic solar thermal systems work by collectors on the roof, absorbing the radiated energy from the sun. This energy heats fluid, which is pumped around and collected in a hot water cylinder.
Air Source Heat Pumps
Fitted outside the home, the pumps use environmental air to generate heating and hot water. Heat pumps extract thermal energy (heat) from the air, which is then converted by a heat pump to generate heating and hot water for your home.
Heat pumps are one of the most economical, effective, and environmentally friendly methods. Heat comes from the environment itself and much less energy than other types of home heating.
How do I get green home energy?
If you want to explore alternative ways to heat your home, now is the time. The government’s Green Homes Grant is providing homeowners with two thirds of the cost of green measures up to the value of £5,000 (this goes up to £10,000 for low income households).
