What is the New Green Homes Grant?
The new Green Homes Grant is a government funded scheme for 2020 that entitles UK homeowners to money to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.
The scheme has come from Chancellor Rishi Sunak as part of his £3 billion ‘green recovery’ fund which was announced in July 2020.
Almost two-thirds of this fund is being used for Green Homes Grants. The grants are free cash in the form of vouchers that households must put towards energy-efficient home improvements.
Now we’ve cleared up the question: ‘What is the New Green Homes Grant?’ you might have a few more questions. Read on to discover everything you need to know about the new 2020 grant.
Why are home energy improvements beneficial?
- Pay less to heat your home forever
- Make your home more energy efficient and sustainable
- Get free money towards fuelling your home
Who can take advantage of the Green Homes Grant?
The Green Homes Grant is available to anyone who owns their own home or owns privately rented properties (private and social landlords).
What money is available?
The government provides vouchers to cover the cost of around two-thirds of the improvement work, up to £5,000. The homeowner makes up the remaining cash.
For example, if the work costs £4,000, the first £2,680 would be covered by the grant and you would fund the remaining the £1,320.
Low income households (receiving one or more benefits) are entitled to vouchers covering 100% of the costs to a maximum of £10,000.
What energy efficient improvements can be funded with the grant?
- Loft insulation
- Cavity wall insulation
- Floor insulation
- Room in roof insulation
- Air source heat pumps
- Solar thermal energy
- Heating controls
- Double glazing
- External doors
What improvements are right for my home?
To make a noticeable impact on your monthly energy bills, the improvements depend on how you heat your home and how efficient it is already. For instance, if you already have an efficient boiler and central heating system, the money may be best spent on insulation. If you have an old boiler, you might want to replace that with an air source heat pump.
Having a survey from a heating specialist is how to find out for sure. They will examine your home, taking into consideration the performance of its existing heating and factors like the walls and flooring. From this, they will tell you which measures will improve your heating and quote the cost.
